Teaching | Momento Mori
The term memento mori means 'remember you must die' and involves reflecting on our own mortality.
In collaboration with School of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, we work with trainee medical and healthcare professionals to reflect on the importance of beliefs, understandings, and attitudes towards loss, grief, death, and bereavement.
Our teaching provides opportunities to discuss and reflect on the different perspectives using art from the Barber Institute of Fine Arts collection to support open questions, looking and facilitated discussion to explore this universal yet challenging topic.
Nurse in Residence
In 2020-2022 we supported a Nurse in Residence, looking at the Barber’s collection through a unique lens and developing ways of using the Barber’s historic collection to inform community healthcare and enrich medical training. This has allowed the team to expand our research and perspectives to support teaching and education.
We have worked in new ways to engage audiences through gallery tours, workshops, and professional CPD activities. This has included using works from A Peasant Woman Digging, The Diggers, and Memories of the Past to discuss health inequalities and dementia to Naum Gabo’s, Linear Construction in Space No 1 to demonstrate tension, space and therapeutic relationships within the NHS.
