Volunteer with the Barber

The Barber Institute of Fine Arts currently offers volunteering opportunities to University of Birmingham students, looking to gain meaningful work experience in the arts and heritage sector.

Volunteer with Barber Concerts as a steward

University of Birmingham students can sign up to be part of our concert stewarding team. Volunteer stewards greet the audience, check tickets, hand out programmes and ensure the safety of the audience for all concerts.

We won’t ask you to commit to steward for every concert - you will be allocated duties according to your availability. If you have enjoyed our concerts in the past, then this is a great way to be more involved!

Please email Celia Walley (Concerts Administrator) [email protected] for more information.

Volunteer with the Learning and Engagement team

As the Barber's galleries are now closed, our Learning and Engagement programme has moved to offsite events in locations across the campus, as well as a few in the city.

Unfortunately, we are not currently accepting new volunteers. We will be working with our existing volunteer pool to support our offsite activities and will not recruit new volunteers until the Barber reopens.

If you are interested in learning more about how museums interact with the community – working with students, families, older people, schools, or the public – please do look out for updates on this page of future opportunities or email the team at [email protected] with the subject line ‘UoB Student Volunteer’ and the team will get back to you.

Volunteer with the Marketing and Communications team

The Barber's Marketing and Communications team regularly supports University of Birmingham students to volunteer in the department.

There are two different types of role available:
  • Administration and Research Volunteer – assist with filing, database management and administrative tasks. Undertake research projects to inform and support campaigns and write blog posts about themes in the collection.
  • Content Creation Volunteer – learn to write engaging copy for email, website and social media. Plan, record and feature in short-form video social media content. Research and draft video scripts about the collection.
Please be aware that spaces have been filled for this term.
To be added to our waitlist email [email protected] and indicate your preference.
