Step into a world of luminous colour, quiet observation, and artistic brilliance with Modern Masterpieces, an intimate display of exceptional Barber paintings on loan to Compton Verney during our closure period. It features six works by major modern artists, including Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, and offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy works from our collection in a fresh setting in the region.
Inviting the viewer to explore everyday moments with new eyes, the pictures present a family gather for dinner, a man lost in thought with his cigarette, or the deep concentration of a woman digging heavy earth. Each canvas offers a glimpse into the emotional and physical lives of people across time and place. Together, they offer timeless reflections on human experience, domestic intimacy, and artistic mastery at the turn of the 20th century.
