Community Engagement

The Barber's Community Engagement programme connects people with our collection, art and each other to improve participant health and well-being in community settings or through creative arts activities in our galleries.

Get Involved: Art for Wellbeing

Art for Wellbeing is a series of friendly, sociable workshops designed by, with and for adults/older adults. Each series runs weekly for five week periods and provides a range of activities that support art making and skills sharing like drawing, textiles, printing, and sculpture.

Connect with other people and our tranquil galleries in this dedicated space for arts and cultural activities for adults aged 50+. Art for Wellbeing is age and dementia friendly for people and their carers.

You can refer yourself to take part or be referred by a supporting healthcare provider.

Please note: the Barber's galleries are closed for a major building improvement project, reopening 2026. Art for Wellbeing will continue as normal throughout the closure period, with sessions held at the Lapworth Museum of Geology in spring and Winterbourne House and Garden in summer.

Community Outreach

We love to work collaboratively with local charities, organisations and settings and have a number of ongoing projects and partnerships.

Working in partnership with trained artist facilitators, residents and staff we recently worked with St Andrews Healthcare, a charity providing specialist mental healthcare for patients with some of the most complex, challenging mental health needs in the UK.

Other previous collaborations included artist-led projects within care and extra-care settings around Birmingham.

We design resources and workshops that consider personal responses to specific artworks and open conversations about our everyday experiences to unlock memories and stories.
