Mousehold Heath is to the north east of Norwich. The barren landscape was a popular subject for local artists in the first half of the 19th century. In this view of the heath Crome filters the scene through a knowledge of Dutch landscape prints with their low horizons, prominent skies and distant windmills. Crome produced a significant group of landscape etchings around 1810. They were studies in their own right, made independently of his paintings. The prints were only published after his death when the plates were reworked to cater for contemporary taste.
