Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796 – 1875)

Landscape with Distant Mountains

Central France, the early 1840s

Oil on canvas

18 x 29.8 cm

This is one of numerous small informal studies that Corot painted on the spot throughout his life.

One such as this would have taken no more than a single session to complete.  He made them as private exercises which might provide inspiration for larger studio compositions.  The studies were not for sale and this example typically remained in Corot’s studio at his death.

The panoramic landscape has not been identified.  It was probably painted in a mountainous district of central France, perhaps the Auvergne or the Limousin.
