Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867)

Catherine Anne Douglas (née North, 1760-1867), Lady Glenbervie

London, 1820/21

Lithograph

315 x 220 mm

This lithograph portrait of Lady Glenbervie was produced after an original drawing by Ingres, created in Rome in 1816.

She wears a large decorated English bonnet with her hair curled fashionably around the face. The highwaisted and long-sleeved silk dress is typical of this period. The patterned shawl and raised neckline is more modest and appropriate for a woman in her early fifties. Catherine would have been able to travel freely to the Continent following the French defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in June, 1815 and the consequent end of the Napoleonic Wars.
