Cornetto and Violin – a contest of equals!

Gawain Glenton cornetto
Kinga Ujszászi violin
Silas Wollston organ

In late 16th and early 17th century Italy and Germany the cornetto and violin were considered equals despite their differences. The cornetto was the older instrument, a symbol of church and state, pomp and ceremony. The violin was the irreverent newcomer, emerging from a background of dance music for the street and tavern. This concert celebrates the historic rivalry with a mix of sophisticated church sonatas, compelling ornamentation and popular ground basses. Who will emerge victorious?
