Student Workshop

‘Women, of every age, of every condition, contract and retain a taste for novels […] The depravity is universal. My sight is everywhere offended by these foolish, yet dangerous, books.’
Sylph no. 5, October 6, 1796
To celebrate International Women’s Day, join artist Laura Onions for a printmaking workshop that revels in the power of ‘the novel’, inspired by the Barber’s painting, The Reader, 1817, by Marguerite Gérard.
In this fun and relaxed workshop, you will create your own vibrant hand-made lino and mono-print book cover posters using the text and imagery of novels written by celebrated female authors from the 18th century and beyond.
No experience necessary, and all materials will be provided.
This workshop is for university students and will be held on-site at the Barber. Limited spaces; booking is essential.
Laura Onions is an artist based in the West Midlands. She is a lecturer in Fine Art with a focus on print at the University of Wolverhampton and also a Programme Assistant at Grand Union, a contemporary art gallery in Birmingham.
