Steamships and Shanties

Singing and Seeing the Port of New York

Be transported back to the Port of New York in 1912…

Discover the history and culture of the Big Apple through short talks from experts from the University’s American studies department exploring George Bellows’s Men of the Docks from diverse angles – images of the docks, sailor’s poems and diaries, and maritime song.

Then join US-based, international folk singers Bonnie and Dan Milner, who began singing maritime songs at South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan in the 1960s, for a rousing performance of traditional sea shanties!
