Drawing Saturdays

Get drawing on the first Saturday of the month!

Join us on the first Saturday of each month and be inspired to get drawing.  Whether a complete beginner, a returning enthusiast or a drawing addict artist tutor Adrian Clamp will guide you through an immersive day of drawing.

Each month you will experience a different process, material or subject matter all whilst exploring the Barber works on paper collection, studying our paintings in more depth or getting inspired by the building and our campus surroundings.

Drawing in the galleries

This is an ideal opportunity to develop an awareness based on the work of internationally recognized artists original work in the Barber Institute collection. The participants will be working in the galleries working direct from both the 2-D and 3-D the collection. Shape, form and rhythm will be key to this session. Sketches and more elaborate drawings will be a focus during the day.

Still-life was used by artists as a form of personal training using successful compositional devises, and symbolism as a way of developing their observational, imaginative and drawing skills. Relationships of position, interval and space will form part of this session. This is a structured day session working from a large group of objects. We will access and discuss key works from the Barber collection during the first part of the session.

Figure drawing from a model

Figure drawing still remains an important part of the development of artists and designers. If you wish to improve your understanding of the proportional and visual characteristics of the human form then this drawing day could assist you with your figure work. Proportion, weight, balance expression and quality of line will be key to this session. We will be using different drawing media and techniques throughout the day. We will access and discuss key works from the Barber collection during the first part of the session.

Drawing manufactured objects

Mechanical forms are a great source of inspiration for artist and designers to get to grips with their understanding of interlocking parts, structures and geometric form using axis, geometry and tone. We will be referring to and producing diagrams to assist with your understanding and development of knowledge using a range of drawing systems. Once again we will select and discuss works from the Barber store/archive.
