13 December 2012 was a very special day for the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. On that day 80 years ago, Lady Barber and the original trustees signed the Deed of Settlement, which effectively founded the Institute.
This historic act is to be marked by a year-long programme of celebratory exhibitions, concerts and special events. These began on 13th December with the opening of special exhibitions exploring the lives and passions of Sir Henry and Lady Barber, and the wonderful Art Deco building their fortune helped fund, as well as a contemporary response to Lady Barber’s treasured collection.
Many further exciting exhibitions, events and major loans will follow; the full programme will be announced later this year, with details published in early December in the first of two special 80th anniversary What’s On guides. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this very special anniversary as we pay tribute to our founder and the superb building and collections that her vision and generosity made possible.
