We host two stellar acts as part of the 30th Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival to finish off a packed summer term of performances at the University. The Festival runs from 18th – 27th July across the city.

Back to Bach

Friday 23 and Friday 30 May 1.10pm

Concert pianist Kenneth Hamilton returns to the Barber Institute to present two centuries of perspectives on the music of the great Johann Sebastian Bach through a varied selection of Bach's original compositions and arrangements by Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Busoni.

Zelkova Quartet

Friday 16 May 1.10pm

The Zelkova Quartet was founded at the Royal Northern College of Music under the guidance of Petr Prause, cellist of the Talich Quartet, in 2010. They remain at the RNCM this year to complete an International Artist Diploma in Chamber Music, the institution's most advanced level of study in performance.

Recent performances include recitals at St Martin in the Fields and St John's Smith Square, the latter of which they will return to this coming season. The Zelkova Quartet has recently been made European Chamber Music Academy associates and were finalists in the Royal Over-Seas League competition earlier this year, winning the Elias Fawcett Award for Outstanding Chamber Ensemble.

HERMESensemble

Friday 9 May 1.10pm

HERMESensemble is an Antwerp-based collective for contemporary music and art. As part of their second year in residence at the Department of Music, the ensemble, musicians and artistic director lead a series of workshops with student composers and play through student works, giving invaluable feedback. In this concert the group showcase two staff composers at the University, Scott Wilson and Michel Zev Gordon.
